Care and maintenance guide for longevity
To maintain safe use, the school/setting must:
- Inspect the item before each session.
- Tighten all fixings monthly.
- Re-treat timber annually.
- Check for rot, cracks or instability.
- Remove the item from use immediately if any defect is found.
Outdoor timber will weather, expand and contract. This is normal and requires routine care.
Annual maintenance steps (every 12 months)
- Full safety inspection:
- Check all joints, screws, bolts, brackets, hinges and fixings for movement or loosening.
- Tighten everything and replace any fixings showing rust, bending or wear.
- Look for wobble in frames, posts, balance beams, mud kitchens, climbing units, etc.
- Inspect for splinters, cracks, rot, or soft spots in the timber.
- Deep clean:
- Scrub surfaces with warm soapy water to remove algae, dirt, mould and grime.
- Rinse thoroughly and allow the wood to dry fully before applying any treatments.
- For sensory tables or mud kitchens, clean trays, sinks, pipes and access.
